What Can and Can't Go in a Skip Bin? Melbourne Waste Guide
Before you start loading your skip bin, it's important to know what's allowed and what's prohibited. This Melbourne waste guide covers accepted materials, banned items, and tips to avoid extra charges.

What You CAN Put in a Skip Bin

Most general household and renovation waste is perfectly fine in a skip bin. Accepted materials include:

  • General household rubbish and furniture
  • Timber, wood, and floorboards
  • Bricks, concrete, and tiles (heavy waste bins only)
  • Soil and dirt (heavy waste bins only)
  • Green waste — grass clippings, branches, garden trimmings
  • Metals and old appliances
  • Cardboard and paper
  • Plastics
  • Mixed renovation waste — plasterboard, insulation, roofing material

What You CANNOT Put in a Skip Bin

Certain materials are strictly prohibited due to environmental regulations. These include:

  • Asbestos — requires specialist disposal, not a skip bin
  • Liquid waste, paints, solvents, and chemicals
  • Car batteries and automotive fluids
  • Tyres (more than 4 — check with us for exceptions)
  • Gas cylinders and pressurised containers
  • Medical or biological waste
  • Electrical waste (e-waste) must go to a certified e-waste facility

What About Mixed Heavy Waste?

Mixed heavy waste — a combination of concrete, bricks, tiles, and soil — is accepted in our designated heavy waste bins. These are priced differently from general waste bins because of the weight involved. If your job involves demolition or earthworks, let us know when booking so we can recommend the right bin.

Tips to Avoid Extra Charges

  • Don't overfill — waste must sit below the top rail of the bin. Overfilled bins cannot be transported legally.
  • Separate heavy waste from general waste where possible — mixing can push the bin over weight limits.
  • Never add prohibited items — disposal fees for contaminated loads can be significant.

Still Not Sure?

If you're not certain whether something can go in a skip bin, just give us a call before you book. At Jaykay Bin Hire we're happy to advise — we'd rather you ask first than have a problem on collection day.
